The Long Island Ducks are about one month away from opening the season against the South Maryland Blue Crabs, in Waldorf, Maryland.
Recent new faces, of major league caliber have recently signed with The Long Island Ducks. The two recent signing are right-handed pitcher Vinnie Pestano (223 relief appearances with the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels from 2010 to 2015) and left-hander Wander Perez (Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies organizations). Other signings were outfielder Tyler Holt (Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds 2014-16)and catcher Wilkin Castillo (parts of two seasons in the Majors with the Reds 2008-09).
There were other signings earlier in the year, outfielder Daniel Fields (2017 in the Atlantic League with the Bridgeport Bluefish, first six seasons of his professional career in the Detroit Tigers organization, 118 games with the Double-A Erie SeaWolves. He later split time with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations in 2016, reaching the Triple-A level with both. Fields was originally drafted by the Tigers in the sixth round of the 2009 amateur draft), right-handed pitcher Jair Jurrjens (eight seasons at the Major League level, including five with the Atlanta Braves (2008-12) and one each with the Detroit Tigers (2007), Baltimore Orioles (2013) and Colorado Rockies 2014), infielder Jordany Valdespin (two seasons with the New York Mets 2012-13 and two with the Miami Marlins 2014-15, 2017 season with Olmecas de Tabasco and Leones de Yucatan in the Mexican League)
This was in addition to Matt March, Rob Rogers, Dennis O’Grady and Lew Ford to name a few of the Ducks “steady regulars”. It appears as of now that the Ducks are getting stronger with the new signings, as we get closer to the start of the new season. The Somerset Patriots and York Revolution will be two teams to contend with this year, as the Ducks did last year.
This year will also be special because the Long Island Ducks are hosting the 2018 All-Star Game on July 11, 2018 at 6:35p.m. It should add to what will be an exciting year of baseball.(QuackerJack won his eighth consecutive Mascot of The Year in The Long Island Press’ Best Of Long Island Award)
